Kalen Allen is a whirlwind of talent, humor, and heart—captivating audiences everywhere with his infectious energy and creativity. His journey began when his viral Kalen Reacts videos, featuring his hilarious commentary on bizarre internet recipes, caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres. After inviting Kalen to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he quickly became a regular presence, bringing his unique charm to the stage and major events like the Billboard Music Awards and MTV VMAs.

Since then, Kalen has continued to expand his career in exciting new directions. Whether he's dancing through Netflix’s Meet Me Next Christmas or dazzling Broadway audiences in Elf the Musical, Kalen’s vibrant personality has made him one of Hollywood’s most dynamic multi-hyphenates.

In this Q&A, Kalen reflects on everything from behind-the-scenes moments on set to his love for fashion—and of course, spreading some Christmas cheer!

Q: You’ve mentioned before that you’re from Kansas! Looking back at your childhood, what was one of your favorite things to do while you were growing up there? Was there a spot, activity, or restaurant that you loved?

A: I immediately think barbeque. I don’t eat any barbeque outside of Kansas City. Any time I go back it’s my first stop and if your next question is, where is your favorite spot, the limit does not exist. Each place is unique and has its own style. So, it depends on what I’m craving.

Q: Your Kalen Reacts videos started off with some pretty bizarre recipes—like ketchup cake and apple Twix salad! What was the weirdest food combination you’ve come across in those videos that made you think, “How did this even become a thing?”

A: There was once a hot dog martini. Which honestly, led me to doing less of them. Once they became too outrageous my reactions became false and performative. The reason why the initial ones worked so well was because I had personal connections to them. Such as cornbread, sweet potato pie, and mac and cheese.

Q: Ellen DeGeneres took notice of your Kalen Reacts videos and brought you onto her show, which led to a big opportunity. What was it like meeting Ellen for the first time? Was there any moment behind the scenes that really stood out to you?

A: Honestly, pretty normal and regular. I don’t really get starstruck, but I also try to make sure I’m treating celebrities like regular people. I wasn’t expecting to be given a job though. As far as behind the scenes, I’ll never forget the first time I guest DJ’d the show and Ellen came up to me and said, “Whatever you want to do, we’ll make it happen.” She always believed in me from the jump, even my future growth. That was special to me.

Q: Are there any comedians that influenced the style of humor you share online?

A: Oh absolutely! Some comedians and some comedic actors. My number one is Raven Symoné. I lived and breathed That’s So Raven. I also think of Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, and Mo’Nique.

Q: You recently starred in Meet Me Next Christmas on Netflix, and there’s one scene that’s really stood out to fans…the dance scene! Can you tell us if those dance moves were something you came up with on the spot, or was there choreography involved?

A: Hahaha, so in the script, all it says is, “Jordy teaches a dance combination.” I thought the choreographer was going to teach me what Layla and Teddy do at the competition. But then our director Rusty asked me to improvise the scene, and I said, “Sure, why not?” That was our first take. We did a calmer version, but the better one made it into the movie.

Q: Was there a funny behind-the-scenes moment on set that made you laugh the hardest or just totally caught you off guard?

A: There’s a scene in the movie where I interrupt Layla and Teddy while they’re making creme brulee, and in one of the takes, I said to Christina, who plays Layla, “Do you know how to dip it low and pick it up slow?” Such a good meta moment!

Q: You're currently in the Broadway revival of Elf the Musical! How has the transition been from online content and film to performing live on Broadway? What has that experience been like for you?

A: Well, I don’t know if it’s a transition. It’s more of a homecoming. I’ve done theater my whole life. It is also what one of my degrees is in. The only difference is the schedule. That’s tough. Broadway is no joke. It’s a lot of work. But it is incredibly fulfilling! I call it a homecoming because it’s the one thing I’ve done that I feel completely capable of doing. I don’t think I’m that good at being a content creator/influencer or judging food competition shows. But I can perform and entertain people in my sleep.

Q: What are the three top fashion essentials you can't live without? Or are there any fashion brands you’re really loyal to and can’t get enough of?

A: A coat! I have so many coats! I love a cinched waist. I love a moment of drama. I don’t necessarily gravitate towards any specific brands. I have been focusing more on European and independent brands, though. They do it better, in my opinion.

Q: What are three fashion pieces or brands on your wishlist this year? Anything you’re excited to get your hands on?

A: I’m really obsessed with this brand, Manière De Voir. They are very focused on clean lines and modern tailoring. I’ve been in New York City for about four years, and I can sense my style evolving as I approach my thirties. Honestly, that excites me. I feel like I get really dressed up for events and special occasions, but I’m interested in infusing that sense of style into my everyday life.

Q: You released a brand-new holiday album, Christmas Memories! What inspired you to put together this album, and how does it differ from your previous musical projects?

A: I’ve become more interested in investing in myself instead of who people want me to be, especially creatively. I worked on the album for three years, and there is so much of me in it. It chronicles my experience of Christmas from adult Kalen to a child. I also wanted to create something that wasn’t like any other holiday album. The album only has one cover, and we reimagined the traditional songs on the album. Everything else, I wrote. It’s also an album that you have to play in order, the songs tell a story!

Q: Out of all the tracks on your new Christmas album, do you have any favorites?

A: Yes, “Go Santa Go,” “I Still Believe (Christmas Memories),” “One Wish,” and “Go Tell It” are my absolute favorites. They change often, though.

Q: How has mentorship played a role in your career, and are there any artists you look up to in the industry?

A: I think I have many indirect mentors, some of whom I know personally and some that I admire from afar. To name a few, Oprah, Beyoncé, Ellen, Tabitha Brown, and Scott Evans. I study them and the way they work. I am very much a person who is always learning and growing no matter where I am.
